Medical Biotechnology

Medical Biotechnology refers to the application of biotechnology for medical related purpose with the aim to solve current medical problems and also as a tool for innovation of new substances (e.g., biomaterial) and pharmaceutical compounds such as drugs. Medical Biotechnology also encompass the applications of genetic engineering techniques to produce recombinant DNA products for medical and pharmaceutical uses.

Recombinant DNA applications have focused on the production of complex therapeutic proteins such as growth hormones, interferons, interleukins, and growth hormones, etc., for medical purposes. These recombinant DNA techniques are also utilised for vaccine development and production. Large amounts of monoclonal antibodies from hybridoma cells have been produced with cell fusion technology for use in diagnostic, therapeutic and purification applications.
